June 02, 2009 - Two Sacramento artists, Ann Tracy and Liv Moe, will show their work in rooms at Reno's NadaDada Motel, where over 100 artists are expected to display and create work, June 18th to the 21st, 2009 at Hotel El Cortez, 239 W 2nd St and the Town House Motor Lodge, 303 W 2nd St in downtown Reno, NV. Tracy will take up residence at the El Cortez in room 212 and Moe will exhibit at the Town House. Hours will generally be 11 am to 4 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
For Tracy’s 2nd year exhibiting at the festival, she is creating an installation involving video and blow-up dolls, as well as new work from the Motel Variations series. She will share the space with Cherie Hacker’s “Sex Sells, Art Starves” poster series and decadent jewelry from CynStones, created by local actor Cynthia Burdick. The Motel Variations are limited edition digital collages, inspired by the Dada art movement, which subvert, parody and critique mainstream cultural assumptions of motel activities. Tracy and Burdick will also perform erotic poetry and bawdy limericks at the Hotel El Cortez’s Tropicana Ballroom on Saturday, June 20th at 8 pm.
Tracy’s fine art has been exhibited from Japan to Maui to New York City. In 2003 her work, “Stop” was included in the catalog of the “Violence Against Women” exhibition, Group 78 Amnesty International, Tokyo, Japan. Her digital painting “Message 3” has been juried into the 2008 edition of American Art Collector. Currently that painting is being exhibited at the “Synthesis: Art & Science” show at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, Escondido CA.
Born in Fargo, ND in 1976, Moe is an artist, curator, and writer who currently lives and works in Sacramento, California. Through her work Moe traces a distinct American history through the use of mundane domestic objects and discarded personal possessions. In recent years Moe’s creations have employed everything from children’s bed linens, wigs, and brick-a-brack, to the Crosley Automobile. The results can at times be funny or absurd while at others charming and poignant. Moe’s projects have included sculpture, documentary film, digital photography, and kinetics.
The work shown at this free festival will run the gamut from drawing and painting to digital work to sculpture to installations. A wide variety of music and performance is scheduled each evening at the Hotel El Cortez’s Tropicana Ballroom.
This DIY artists' movement began in 2007 when six artists joined forces in Reno, not so much to be radical, as the artists from their Dada namesake would have had, but simply to create an opportunity to exhibit their work and to offer the same to others. The artist/organizers worked with the management of historic Hotel El Cortez in downtown Reno and artists flocked to the event to rent their own rooms and open their doors to the public. There were over 1200 people who came to see the work at that first year's event! The number of artists involved during the course of the first 3 years has risen from 6 to over 100. NadaDada adherents are from the disciplines of visual art, music, poetry, performance.
