October 12, 2009 - The survey recognises businesses for their commitment to diversity and inclusion, and promoting opportunities for women both internally and externally.
The energy industry continues to face a real challenge in attracting diverse groups of talented individuals to the power-generation sector. One way npower tackles this is through ‘npower brighter futures’ - a range of external education programmes aimed at inspiring young people from their first day at school to their first day at work.
npower’s activities to promote the industry to women, come in the form of apprentice and graduate recruitment schemes, power station tours and science and engineering themed activities at school. For aspiring young engineers, npower has the Climate Cops. All these programmes are already having an impact through increased interest in npower’s schemes. As a result of this npower now employs several female graduate engineers and female apprentices, including Katie Lester, winner of Young Woman Apprentice of the Year 2008.
Nick Smith, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at RWE npower comments: “We take gender seriously from boardroom to back office and employ women on merit at all levels of our organisation, including some of the most influential and significant leaders in our sector.”
RWE npower has a number of women at director and senior executive level across its functions and continues to encourage female employees to develop their careers.
Anne Geilen, Executive Support Manager comments: “I joined the npower graduate scheme in 2007 and this year took on a permanent role as Executive Support Manager for RWE npower’s Chief Finance Officer. This role is particularly important to the development of future senior managers, and I now have a place on the RWE Group’s international training programme for young talent. This role is providing me with a wonderful opportunity to further develop my professional skills, which will hopefully take me places!”
