July 03, 2009 - “If you are going to lead other people, you have to force yourself to be an optimist, its easy to do when things are going well, hard to do when things are going poorly, but if you want to be a leader, you have to build up that characteristic in yourself, even if you do not have it by nature.” Powerful words spoken by Rudolph Giuliani, Former Mayor of New York City, at the recently held the 18th CFO Summit hosted by marcus evans. In his much anticipated keynote address to CFOs from throughout North America Mr Giuliani stated that optimism is the first principle of leadership; “you always have to think from the point of view of the positive if you’re a CFO.”
Secondly he noted, “The most important point about being a leader at a time of any kind of difficulty is to think of yourself and instill in the people around you, the idea of being a problem solver.” He believes that optimism coupled with a problem-solving attitude was a winning combination that leads to success. The ability to take a problem, see it as a challenge and find the opportunities within it is key. He also spoke of the importance of goals, teamwork, holding on to your best people and preparation in crisis times. Highly rated by attendees, his closing session was well worth the wait.
Lauded by Mr Giuliani as a “very satisfying and very rewarding experience,” the CFO Summit aims to bring key areas of concern to the table whilst providing executives with the opportunity to interact with leaders in the industry, their peers and providers of technology solutions and services geared entirely towards the growing needs of the CFO. This, Mr Giuliani believes, is what separates this event from others - “It is very important for the CFOs to come together and to speak with people in their discipline and other disciplines who have found solutions… I think the ability to have interchange is the critical part of that.”
The event featured presenters from some of the leading companies through North America including; ADT Worldwide, PACCAR Inc., The Sherwin-Williams Company, Capital One Financial Corporation and GameStop Corp.
