Royal Mail Targets Facebook Users With Smiler Campaign

Royal Mail is launching a new application on the Facebook® Platform as part of its drive to deliver innovation in marketing and target new audiences through social media.

(1888PressRelease) February 19, 2009 - This latest application has been created by Reading Room, chosen for its ability to build an application that will understand, communicate and connect with its target audience.

The Royal Mail Smile Calendar application allows Facebook’s more than 150 million users to create and customise a calendar with ‘feel good dates’ such as birthdays, anniversaries or parties instead of work meetings. These dates can easily be shared with friends and drive traffic to the Royal Mail shop, where they can purchase personalised Smilers stamp sheets. These allow you to add a personal touch to your mail by adding a photograph of your choice to Royal Mail stamps.

“This Facebook application is a step for us to evolve the Royal Mail brand and reach our customers who have embraced social networks as a way of life. We hope that through our work with Reading Room, we can begin an unobtrusive communication with our customers and drive traffic to the Royal Mail site” explains Sue Edmond, Digital Brand Manager at Royal Mail.

Reading Room has worked closely with Royal Mail ensure the new Smile Calendar application is in line with its various other digital programmes, and has implemented steps to evolve the application to promote interest with its target audience. The new application has been built to grow in line with user feedback and is flexible enough to be re-developed based upon comments received.

Margaret Manning CEO at Reading Room continues “We are proud to be working with a brand such as Royal Mail and to help it move its digital programmes forward. The campaign we have created demonstrates Royal Mail’s plan of using social networks in a creative way to build a communication with potential customers by adding value rather than selling directly to consumers.”

Following this successful launch Royal Mail and Reading Room will continue to work closely together with further digital communications campaigns to increase traffic to the online shop.
