Rough Linen Describes the 'Seven Deadly Linen Crimes'

  • (1888PressRelease) March 06, 2014 - San Rafael, Calif. - Marin County, Calif.-based Rough Linen issued an all-points bulletin detailing the Seven Deadly Linen Crimes. These highly objectionable offenses, which are innocent enough on the surface but have been directly linked to careless and slipshod interior decor, were detailed in the online company's newsletter last week by Rough Linen founder Tricia Rose:

1: Duvet Cover - Sloppy Fit

According to Tricia, sloppy fit is the duvet crime, since the job of a duvet cover is to cover and protect the duvet, not to cover the mattress. Sloppy fit is often marked by a duvet cover with a lump at the bottom, but none at the top: "The cover needs to be snug on the infill, otherwise it will shift to leave you with sad, empty flapping corners," she explains. "The duvet can be 6" larger than the cover, even more if you want it very fluffy, but can never be smaller. If you want the duvet to cover the mattress, start with a larger infill."

    2: Sheets - Short Sheets

Short sheets are a first-degree linen crime. According to Tricia, a minimum of 8" is required to tuck underneath the mattress, and this can be difficult with an extra thick mattress. To avoid committing such an unforgiveable crime, consider providing mattress measurements to Rough Linen, who will cut the linens to fit. Better yet, consider a slimmer, leaner mattress which will look more elegant and potentially be more comfortable: "You might consider ditching your mat-tress base at the same time," adds Tricia. "Not only does a leaner profile look more elegant, a Eu-ropean-style base is far more comfortable."

    3: Pillowslips - Insert Shows

Pillowslips should never show - so Rough Linen pillowslips provide an extra degree of security and mitigate a potential breakout. "Our pillowslips have a tuck to contain the infill, and our shams have buttons or zippers," Tricia says. "The end-result is neat and contained, and you don't need to fuss with them."

    4: Bedskirts - Too Short

If a bedskirt is too short, there is no way it can ever be anything but skimpy. Simply put, this is against the linen law and is a bedskirt crime. Related misdemeanors include having the plain lin-ing under the mattress show. "Bedskirts need to be 6" smaller than the bed size to stay out of sight," observes Tricia. "Rough Linen's bedskirts are perfect, plain and simple. When they do their job, you shouldn't even notice them."

    5. Tablecloth - Uneven Hang

This is a more subtle crime: an uneven hang. "Tell us your table dimensions and we will work it out an even drop," says Tricia. "If the cloth is too long, granny will sit on it and little children will trip on the corners, guaranteed." A pardon is issued for the super-stylish, who can get away with anything including raw edges, asymetrical settings, layering, puddling and mixing it up.

    6. Curtains - Skimpy

Curtains can cheat stylish looks by being skimpy, or more infrequently, they can smother good looks by being too full. To combat this routine offense, Rough Linen provides custom lengths based on provided window size measurements at no extra charge. "Most panels need to have about one and a half times fullness, while Sheer Myriad curtains need more like two times full-ness," Tricia says.

    7. Summer Cover

Alas, the seventh deadly linen crime isn't an offense at all. Light, well finished, well behaved, solo or with other bedding, they keep their cool and commit no crime. "Just throw them over the bed and that's it. Like my darling Himalayan Shibui, they can do no wrong," Tricia concludes.
