April 14, 2009 - Close to the end, Patrick Swayze, 56, chose to shoot a new television show, The Beast, despite losing constant weight and undergoing rounds of chemotherapy. The Dirty Dancing and Ghost star has started preparing himself for death, reports say. "Patrick recently got word that the cancer had spread to his liver and that is what his doctors said would begin the countdown to the end," a source told National Enquirer magazine. "Patrick knew it was coming because he was suffering increased weakness. At times, he was so weak that he could barely walk without feeling faint. Sometimes he feels out of breath and has to sit down." Patrick Swayze told Lisa, his wife of 33 years, and his brother Donny that he does not have long to live. Lisa phoned Donny in Los Angeles and told him he needed to come to Chicago, where Patrick had been filming the A&E television show The Beast. In the publicity shots for the show, it is clear how the disease has ravaged the handsome actor.
During the shoot, Patrick Swayze said: "I'm still fine to work, I haven't changed - oh, I have changed, what am I saying? It's a battle zone I go through. Chemo, no matter how you cut it, is hell on wheels," he told The New York Times. Recently, as the cancer spread, Patrick Swayze told Barbara Walters: "Yeah, I'm scared. Yeah, I'm angry. Yeah, I'm (asking), 'Why me?” Without question, his focus and dedication to delivering the new show despite his sickness is both courageous and inspiring. Two decades after Dirty Dancing and more than a decade after Ghost, Patrick Swayze took on the challenge of The Beast. Patrick Swayze plays Charles Barker, a veteran FBI agent and trainer to rookie agent Ellis Dove (Travis Fimmel) in the new series.
“He’s amazing and a real inspiration,” says Travis Fimmel. “He’s such an icon. Patrick moves me. He led by example.” According to Fimmel, Patrick Swayze’s illness was never a stumbling block in the series: “You feel for him more than thinking of how his condition would affect his performance and the show. He’s a man. He stands up and takes life as it is. He takes the most out of life and never gets defeated.” Indeed, the New York Times calls Swayze’s performance “impressive” and “remarkable” in execution; the Chicago Sun-Times says “Swayze turns in a subtle and strong performance”; while for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Patrick is “gaunt,” intensely energetic,” and simply, “magnificent.”
