  • Las Vegas, NV-AZ (1888PressRelease) January 22, 2015 - On Dec. 10, Las Vegas Metro officers held a live demonstration of the risks that Las Vegas pedestrians face on a daily basis. The event's purpose was to show how more caution is needed by both drivers and pedestrians to make the city's roads and sidewalks safer.

Las Vegas personal injury attorney Robert Apple said that he is encouraged by Metro's proactive efforts to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities. He said that he's seen plenty of individuals seriously injured or even killed because of unsafe practices on Las Vegas streets. Mr. Apple agrees with Metro that both pedestrians and drivers need to be more careful.

During the live demonstration, officers went through three exercises. In the first, an officer wore earbuds and listened to music while crossing the street. In three attempts, he didn't hear a car approaching until it was in striking distance. In another demonstration, an officer darted into traffic, forcing a car to make a hard stop. That showed the dangers that children face when they run into the street to pick up objects.

Finally, the Metro officers had a 10-year-old girl try to cross a closed street by standing in the median. Officers then drove cars past. Observers were able to see just how close she was to being hit while standing in the median.

Through mid-December, Las Vegas has seen 33 pedestrian accidents. That number represents a decrease from 2012 and 2013. However, Metro officers say any accidents is too many.

Mr. Apple, founder of Apple Law Offices, hopes that continued demonstrations and awareness will help drivers and pedestrians heed caution. "Drivers need to slow down and keep a more watchful eye," he said. "And pedestrians need to follow the stated rules about when and where to cross the street. Both sides could help by taking their eyes off their phones and paying more attention."
