Dr. Rita Helfand, Associate Director of Epidemiologic Science at the National Center for Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will speak on “Controlling Infectious Diseases: Progress and Challenges in Addressing Known and Unknown Threats” at GTCbio’s Bugs & Drug Conference on Sept. 22-23, 2008 in San Diego, CA.


(1888PressRelease) August 21, 2008 - Dr. Rita Helfand, Associate Director of Epidemiologic Science at the National Center for Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will speak on “Controlling Infectious Diseases: Progress and Challenges in Addressing Known and Unknown Threats” at GTCbio’s Bugs & Drug Conference on September 22-23, 2008 at the DoubleTree Club Hotel in San Diego, CA.
Experiences with recent domestic and global infectious disease outbreaks have uncovered strengths and weaknesses in public health preparedness and provided important lessons for improving our ability to respond to infectious disease threats. Dr. Helfand will cover the importance of national, state, and local preparedness planning and training, enhanced surveillance measures, and improved collaborations among the clinical, research, public health, and veterinary sectors. Ensuring strong collaborative activities across multiple levels and disciplines will expand our ability to monitor infectious diseases, enable earlier recognition and prompt response to unusual signs, symptoms, or laboratory results that could signal a potential outbreak, and improve the focus and outcome of infectious disease control efforts.
