April 29, 2008 - The Toyota Prius is rated the world’s best selling gas-electric hybrid car. It combines a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder, Atkinson cycle gasoline engine with an electric drive motor. The gasoline engine produces 76 horsepower, and the permanent-magnet electric drive motor produces a maximum power of 67 horsepower, giving the Prius an overall power of 110 horsepower. The 2008 Toyota Prius has variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which facilitates distribution and optimization of power delivery across the engine’s speed range.
The five-door Prius is noted for its aerodynamic looks. It has a super-low 0.26 coefficient of drag (Cd), which cuts out interior noise and reduces fuel consumption. It has a 106.3-inch wheelbase, and spacious legroom of 38.6 inches.
Among its safety features are three-point seatbelts for all rear seating positions; front seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters; advanced, dual front air bags; front and rear side-curtain air bags; vehicle stability control; anti-lock brake system; standard driver and front passenger seat-mounted side air bags and electronic brake-force distribution.
