April 03, 2007 - Well, maybe not quite the “Milk Man”, but not far from it. AquaBar, a luxury water service, recently announced it will start focusing more on its home delivery distribution of bottled water to customers, as environmental concerns increase in a very volatile bottled water market. AquaBar, an eco-conscious company, states “some data points to the increased use and distribution of bottled water to be a part of the growing landfill waste problem.” The company hopes by distributing directly to homes and offices, they will help reduce the unnecessary waste, and instead of mass-distributing product to large retailers they will ship product directly to customers.
“We already made the conscious decision to stop distributing product to large grocery retailers because of our concerns and respect for the environment, but this is an issue that must be tackled at the consumer and manufacturer levels, as we only supply product as much as the public demands it” says Jason Boardé, owner and founder of AquaBar.
The company plans to initiate their new enhanced service in California and launch a statewide campaign, mostly internet based, informing residents of their “water home delivery” service. They believe consumers would be interested in receiving their unique water brands directly to their home or office instead of schlepping huge containers from stores. Also, with 90% of the products that AquaBar markets and distributes being in glass bottles, it makes it rather appealing to eco-conscious Californians to purchase product directly…it also reduces the price of water. This beverage home delivery service by AquaBar could start a trend of its own and bring back the proverbial “Milk Man” in an era were consumers and buyers alike have lost touch with the brands they buy. Yes…whatever happened to companies that were amiable toward their clientele and cared about their customers? Most likely they’ve gone the way of the Dinosaurs and in their place now are large conglomerates who seek global domination. But AquaBar seems to holdfast to their belief in a personable service and partnering with brands that are boutique in size and produces quality over quantity.
“Our primary focus is on-premise and home delivery, which means bottled water for the table at fine establishments and large hotel properties, as well as direct distribution to consumers. We’ve been approached by some pretty large companies…I don’t see the value in working with companies of that size, nor is it a smart investment on our part because they only are concerned with numbers and increasing their bottom line. Most do not have a proper marketing plan that would educate and make people aware of their product and pawn too much responsibility off on distributors like us. This coupled with a lacking brand loyalty as companies jump around from one marketer to another, makes poor business sense. We could never be profitable with such an antiquated way of doing business.”
The costs and materials associated with the production of plastic water bottles seems to be a major worry among eco-conscious establishments and consumers alike. While the price of petroleum, which plastic bottles are made of, has gone up and market data points out a spike in use of plastic bottles, there is a growing backlash over bottled water and some companies and consumers are reverting back to glass bottles or simply upgrading their tap water systems. Glass bottles do cost more than plastic bottles, but they’re more eco-friendly, can be reused or recycled and people are less likely to toss them aside and onto the street.
“Could you imagine rolling down your car window and chucking out a glass bottle on to the road way only see it shatter into a million pieces? No! Glass does present it own challenges, but far from plastic bottles.”
Everyone knows water is healthy and good for you, but as consumers and businesses cry out against the increase in plastic bottled water pollution, should the focus solely be on water? What about the millions of other products that we buy on a daily basis that come in petroleum based containers like soda, cosmetics, food and cleaning supplies?
“This issue appears not to be limited to bottled water alone and those people who have decided to single out the bottled water industry are making a big mistake. Neither escalating this frightening new trend and pushing people to consume more through their tap is not the answer…it does nothing to help fight for conservation and its teaching people that tap water is free. This frivolous behavior by some members of the public and the media is presenting the wrong message. Over consumption is a major problem in America. Consumers have the power to change things, they can do that with their pocketbook. With the internet you can shop for most things online, especially for the essentials like bottled water. There is no reason for a grocery store to have an entire section just for one product. With mega stores like Target, WalMart and K-Mart on the rise, I think the facts and evidence is clear.”
AquaBar’s new home delivery service is a great way to help combat the increase in bottled water pollution. Online shopping is more eco-friendly and once you’ve developed a routine, it becomes quite simple. Ordering online saves time, money and could potentially be better for the ecosystems around the world. Yes, traveling to the nearest store sounds very convenient, but driving and schlepping your groceries home in plastic bags and taking the time to do such, when you could be doing something more productive seems more efficient. The deliveries of products from companies that offer home delivery have a routes and it not only reduces the number of product on the market, but it also lowers car emissions and green house gases.
