August 09, 2007 - Officials are optimistic about the rescue attempt of six trapped miners. They fell victim to a tunnel collapse. Rescue crews could not reach them using a parallel shaft, so they are opting to use a huge drill to bore through the top of the mountain in which the men are trapped.
Word of the trapped miners came out Monday after the collapse happened. This followed a 4.0 magnitude earthquake that hit within 20 miles of the mine shaft where the men are.
It is not clear if the earthquake triggered the collapse, but the implications will probably be clear for most readers. The rescue team is working hard to bring these men back alive according to officials involved. It brought back memories of the incident of 13 miners who were trapped after an explosion at the Sago Mine of West Virginia which occurred in January of last year.
