September 03, 2007 - As the traditional Spanish property sales season gets underway, developers and agents are forecasting record numbers of inquiries from Britain and other rainbelt counties after the worst summer weather and UK Government statistics for 2006 showing all time high numbers of Brits moving fulltime to Spain.
Specialists, PropertyInSpain.Net reported record numbers of “high quality, serious inquiries” for the 15,000 properties on offer from Spain’s leading developers - with a 30 percent surge during the deluges of July that hit northern Europe.
“Swopping a rainbelt lifestyle for the benefits of a warmer, sunnier place like Spain is not a difficult decision. Coupled with a cost of living 35% lower than the UK and the 100s of flights a day to Spain, getting there and back has never been easier,” said spokesman, Terry Walker.
What are people buying from PropertyInSpain.Net. “Key ready apartments and resales, mainly in popular areas like Costa Blanca and Ibiza. It seems British buyers want to move very fast.” One buyer flew to Spain to confirm his online selection, signed for the 100% mortgage and bank account, ordered his furniture and utility hook-ups and will be moving in to enjoy sea views and sunshine – all within four weeks.
The position of Spain as the favourite European destination has been confirmed by property portal Propertyline.com who said that 43 per cent of its enquiries had been for Spanish property - well ahead of second placed France.
It cited the continued advantages of Spain such as the excellence of its beaches with over 500 blue flags and the ease of accessibility through low-cost airlines as reasons why this popularity is continuing, adding that Spain has seen off the negative publicity caused by a correction in property prices earlier this year.
Barclays Buying Abroad reported that the number of enquiries they have received in the last twelve months has totalled 18,000, twice the number in the year before.
Barclays Buying Abroad director Richard Exton said: "Brits are familiar with the idea that we only have two seasons: the winter and July. With the terrible weather we have experienced in July and throughout the summer many people are not prepared to sit through a year-long winter and are looking for a getaway to sunnier climates."
After the Office of National Statistics announcement on record emigration in 2006, there may be little surprise if the record is broken again in 2007 - with 1,000s of families swapping rainbelt for sunbelt ending up in Spain.
