  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) July 11, 2014 - A group of LA moms who work together at a radio station have taken top honors in the inaugural "Mommy Movement," a Southern California weight-loss competition sponsored by a new diet and lifestyle book that helps readers safely lose 20 lbs in 4 weeks and keep it off. Nina Davalos of Whittier, Thousand Oaks resident Vanessa Herron, Ryan Cash of Burbank and Ashley Myers of La Crescenta, who dubbed themselves Radio Mammas, lost a total of 182 lbs in 12 weeks. They were among 80+ other mommy groups throughout LA, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego who participated in the competition. The winning team was selected based on their physical transformation and the power of their stories.

Cynthia Stamper-Graff, who co-authored the book, "The New Lean For Life" - sponsor of the Mommy Movement said she hoped that by targeting moms, entire families would be influenced to change their eating habits and make other positive lifestyle changes.

"The Radio Mammas emerged the winner of the competition as they successfully lost the weight they hoped to shed while supporting the efforts of each other. Also, just as important, each of the group members influenced their families to make healthy changes in their eating habits and lifestyle choices," said Graff, whose book is backed by 40 years of clinical success in which 750,000 people have lost a combined 15 million pounds 79% of whom have kept weight off. "The families have reported significant improvements in their weight and level of activity and that's exactly what we were looking for."

Graff said that the group will soon embark on a weekend excursion to NYC complete with tickets to a Broadway show, beauty makeovers and other perks.

Graff co-wrote the book with French researcher and clinician Reginald Allouche, M.D. and is a follow-up to Graff's previous book, "Lean For Life," that sold 1 million copies.

    Nina is 45

Her journey has been one of commitment, accountability, and inspiration. Losing 80 pounds changed her perspective in every aspect of her life. She is now a healthy and active mom to her son, an energetic and happy wife, and a better leader at work because she feels better mentally and physically. She says she is moved by the people around her who have changed their lives due to her transformation. Among the comments she hears each day, "I just signed up for my first marathon," "I started to eat healthier because of you," "How did you do it"? "You look 10 years younger," "I started an exercise routine because you inspired me." Because of this, she says she wants to be a beacon of hope for others who are struggling, "I had no idea how much my journey would affect others and now feel that if I can inspire just one person to change their life, it would have been worth the journey."

Vanessa Herron is a mother of 4 who range in age from 13-21. She had a huge wake-up call when she had her blood pressure taken not only was it "through the roof," but she learned she was pre-diabetic and more than 80lbs overweight. Her initial efforts to lose weight failed, but then she learned about the Mommy Movement from friends at work. Vanessa says following the plan in the book is the easiest and most effective lifestyle change she has ever made. Her overweight husband has been dropping pounds and is now more active and making healthier food choices and her kids are eating more fruits and veggies because she keeps them around. She has lost 50 lbs and wants to lose 20 more. Her proudest moment was being able to run races with her children instead of merely cheering from the sidelines, giving away bags & bags of clothes to charity that are too big for her and having her family (husband, parents AND kids) tell me how proud they are of me for taking control of my health.

During her pregnancy, she gained much more weight than she expected. Postpartum, she tried to lose the lingering 15 lbs, but they wouldn't budge. She joined the Mommy Movement, learned about proper nutrition and now pays closer attention to what she is eating. Ashley lost the 15 lbs and is easily maintaining her current weight. She says she's looking forward to having more children, will be better informed through her next pregnancy, plans to watch what she eats and will continue to be active the entire time.

A single mom, the 5'2" has dropped 47 lbs. from her nearly 200 lb frame after being recruited by her co-workers at the station. She gained most of her weight after the birth of her son 8 years ago. She fell into a depression and food was her solace. Though she thought she was eating "healthy," the pounds kept piling up and she ballooned from her pre-pregnancy weight of 130 to 188. Taking boot camp classes intended to help her shed those pounds resulted in a weight gain of 10 lbs. It wasn't until the Mommy Movement that she was finally able to say goodbye to nearly 50 lbs. The single mom is delighted that her son is taking pride in her new appearance and he, too, is eating healthy.
