RAD Recovers Soils Through Modern Farming Techniques

RAD introduces no-till farming and new crop rotation schemes to enhance productivity of its land holdings.

(1888PressRelease) October 28, 2008 - Russian Agricultural Division (www.radcorp.ru), PAVA’s new subsidiary, introduces modern farming techniques in its arable units. This is especially important considering the current condition of the soils. RAD continuously expands its land bank selecting only fertile areas; however, due to long neglect their potential is not fully exploited. Therefore, RAD’s team draws on the expertise of western agronomists and introduces crop rotation to recover the soils and improve yields.

According to various new schemes of crop rotation, RAD will alternate planting of different crops on each field, namely winter wheat and winter rye, spring wheat, buckwheat, peas, barley and sunflower seed. Part of the fields will be left fallow, which will ensure that fertility of the land remains intact. Economically, the rotation scheme will allow to grow crops which are in demand on the market and not to distract funds for financing cultivation of non-core products.

Other innovations at RAD include no-till farming which decreases the rate of soil erosion. This is achieved through reduced ploughing, as well as lowered application of herbicides.

In the long term, RAD’s ultimate aim is to maximize yields to 4-6 tonnes per ha for all range of crops, the company says.
