October 20, 2007 - The Starlight Singers of Lexington, and Walter Bruce and the Mighty Soul Travelers will be featured performers at the Gospel Exhibition in Lexington Nov. 3.
The musical event is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Milton Center, Highway 17 South and will feature traditional and contemporary sounds by the popular musical groups. The event will honor Sarah Gaines, a local promoter who has brought nationally recording artists including Spencer Taylor and The Highway QCs, Doc McKenzie and The Gospel Four. Gaines's determination to bring gospel artists to this small town speaks to the influence of her gospel singer and spiritual father.
"Sarah has carried on the legacy of the late Rev. Earnest Deering and has helped keep gospel music alive here," said Arnette Owen, sister of Gaines and one of the event's planners.
Deering was a popular local minister who performed for two decades with the Starlights. After his death 10 years ago, Gaines brought artists to the area while his son Amos L. Deering performed with the Starlights. Amos Deering passed away in April of this year.
The event speaks to the rich musical heritage of this small town, where gospel shows bring out enthusiasts. Quartet style singing evokes nostalgia, and up-tempo songs bring crowds to their feet.
The event is free and open to the public.
