Qualitest Introduces The FT-F1 Fogging Tester Automotive Interior Materials

Fogging tests measure the tendency for plastic or elastomeric materials to volatize substances which can condense and collect on interior surfaces when in use. The FT-F1 Fogging tester is designed to test the fogging characteristics of automotive interior materials in accordance to DIN 75201, ISO 6452, SAE J1756.

(1888PressRelease) April 06, 2009 - Testing the fogging characteristics of interior materials in auto mobiles has become increasingly important in order to minimize harmful contaminants and ensure safe driving conditions.

There are two typical methods for testing the fogging characteristics of automotive interior materials. One method is the photometric method where the light scattering film left on a glass surface is measured using the FT-F1 fogging tester and a gloss meter. The other method is to deposit the foreign material onto aluminum foil, the FT-F1 fogging tester and a sensitive scale will accommodate this gravimetric method.

The test sample is placed in a sealed beaker - the inside surface of the cooled beaker cover is either glass (for the photometric method) or aluminum foil (for the gravimetric method). The bottom of the beaker is placed in a controlled temperature oil bath for a specified period of time - typically 3 hours for the photometric method and 16 hours for the gravimetric method. For the photometric method, gloss readings of the glass cover before the test and after conditioning following the test are compared. For the gravimetric method, weights of the test sample and the aluminum foil before the test and immediately after the test are compared.

The FT-F1 fogging tester is designed to accommodate the current standard test methods for fogging tests. The tester features wide temperature range and accuracy which allows the tester to be used in developing new test methods. The FT-F1 fogging tester is essential for volatile composition evaporation determination under high temperature from PVC, fabrics, leather, non-weaving cloth, and more. Another important application is for the determination of fogging phenomenon in car headlights.
