Investment in private equity deals for Canadian firms remained strong in the third quarter despite the ongoing impact of the credit crunch, new research shows.
According to figures from Canada's Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA), leveraged buyout companies invested C$3.3 billion in Canadian companies in 39 transactions during the period.
This compares with the figure of C$12.2 billion invested in 107 deals during the whole of 2006.
This year's total is set to swell further with the proposed buyout of telecommunications firm BCE, the parent company of Bell Canada, which, it is estimated, will stand at C$47.2 billion.
Rick Nathan, president of the CVCA and managing director of Kensington Capital Partners said: 'The third quarter data clearly shows that the buy-out sector in Canada remains strong, in spite of recent instability in the credit markets.
"On an annualised basis, the activity in Q3 would represent a new record year for Canadian buy-outs, exceeding the total investment levels and the number of reported transactions of last year's record pace."
