(1888PressRelease) March 06, 2008 - Provence Promotion, the economic development agency for the Bouches-du-Rhône département of south-eastern France, will be part of the French Pavilion at Oceanology International 2008, which will be held in London from 11 to 13 March. Provence Promotion will present the maritime sector, one of the Bouches-du-Rhône's largest industries.

Provence Promotion helps companies to set up in the region (greenfield developments, partnerships, takeovers and transfers) with the objective of generating regional economic growth. It also assists in the creation and development of innovative projects, competitiveness clusters and other centres of excellence. The region’s maritime industry represents 10,000 jobs and 1,500 businesses across key sectors such as naval architecture, oceanographic instrumentation and yachting.

The Bouches-du-Rhône, which lies west of the Côte d’Azur on the Mediterranean coast, has a maritime reception capacity boasting 14 ports and 22,125 moorings (26% of total French capacity). The 230km of coastline is equipped with large-scale infrastructures, including a mechanical boat lift for mega yachts of over 50 metres and a gigantic paint hall belonging to the Monaco Marine group (90m long x 27m wide x 32m high).

Marseilles, the region’s biggest city, offers top-of-the-range equipment in the sector, including seven remetalling dry docks for large yachts, 300m of quays, telescopic mobile cranes lifting 25 to 300 tonnes, and a travelling crane with a lifting capacity of 500 tonnes. This maritime infrastructure is built upon local expertise in fields such as naval architecture, boilermaking, engineering, pipe work, painting, cabinetmaking and decorating, electrics and electronics, automation, rigging, sail making, oceanographic and navigation instrumentation, sonar, submarine readings and piloting support systems.

La Ciotat is the region's flagship shipyard. It covers an area of 35 hectares and the companies set up within its boundaries include Monaco Marine and Ixcore. It offers direct access to the sea with very deep sea trenches, as well as high-performance equipment, including a 500m x 100m flotation basin, 10 cranes and a 2,000-tonne boat lift.
