Project NRG Interview
On how Project NRG came to be, the group's Lead Producer-Composer Roxxy Red explains, "We’re inspired by the good ol’ days. Nuff said."
So what exactly is Eurodance?
Roxxy explains, "It's the ultimate musical experience. Clubbers gyrate and immerse themselves in the shimmering strobe lights, vibrant music. But Eurodance offers MORE than just an adrenaline-pumping experience- it’s truly emotional if you understand the roots and how Euro tracks are written. They’re like ballads in sexy clothes. We love ballads by the way."
At the height of more popular music such as R N’ B, what’s Project NRG’s vision for Eurodance in the future for Singapore?
Producer-arranger Yuri. L says, "I’d agree with Rox on what he told me once. We’d like to see more rhythm and 100% action as opposed to heavy basslines and "drops". The 90’s had more varieties of rhythm and I think we can take a page from the nostalgic. Rox also mentioned classical and oriental elements as the next big thing. I think that’s a great possibility as well. Let’s not give up. That’s our message to the Eurodance fanbase here in Singapore!"
Roxxy adds, "I think the Italo producers from the 90’s are doing something good in Japan as well, expanding on Eurobeat and other fusion electronica. Let’s include former big guns including Masterboy, Di Bronx & Natali and many others. We respect them a great deal and hope to see them at the forefront of today’s Eurodance music. And especially to revive the scene in other parts of Asia. People like Mauro Farina and his Factory Team (the Producers who did Shannon’s Faraway, Xeyas’ Kiss Me among others). I think that would definitely make a positive difference. There’s more I’d add but that’ll take a encyclopedia’s worth of discussion time. (laughs)"
DJ Natz, former resident deejay of popular dance clubs Rush and Club VII agrees, "It’s fantastic doing projects with these guys. And I’ll have to agree. It all starts with education at the clubs and Eurodance deejays should expand their repertoire in their delivery. It’s all commercial tracks being played here, and there’s just so much untapped gems from the mid-90’s. Freestyle, Italo. I hope to more of those. And Project NRG’s the first step."
Project NRG: Burning All Bridges
The project didn’t come to light until 2004. At one of their clubbing sessions , Roxxy and Yuri met DJ Natz , who was Resident DJ of Rush Dance Club. They spoke of the possibility to form a band that produces Eurodance that returns to the roots and clothed in the sheen of the 21st Century.
