Portland-Vancouver, OR-WA (1888PressRelease)
August 30, 2008 - Portland’s first finish-it-yourself frame shop and gallery will open September 12th. The space, called Artery, is owned and curated by Marilyn Murdoch, and will open by showing a collection from artists who exhibited in the traveling exhibit Beautiful Losers. The show is called Artists from Beautiful Losers and will take place at 4114 N. Vancouver Avenue.
Beautiful Losers was conceived by Christian Strike and Aaron Rose and produced by their studio Iconoclast. Iconoclast describes Beautiful Losers as an exhibition of multi-media art and design that explores the recent work of a diverse group of visual artists that have emerged from the subcultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk, and hip hop in US urban centers.
Some artists showcased in Artists from Beautiful Losers have never set foot in an art school. Some are designers and professional artists. Some were known internationally before Beautiful Losers started touring in 2004; some had their works seen for the first time at the traveling show. None of their works, however, have been shown as a collection before in Portland.
Artists from Beautiful Losers will feature the works of Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Ed Templeton and Portland residents Chris Johanson and Jo Jackson. Also shown will be selected works of Geoff McFetridge, Ryan McGinness, Harmony Korine, Todd James, Cheryl Dunn, Mike Mills, Thomas Campbell, RoStarr, and Cynthia Connolly.
