May 20, 2008 - Not the dim and dusty wine cellar of old, today’s wine cellars are really more like wine “rooms” - well-lit, plush and modern in appearance with a special “tasting area” in which guests may be invited to partake.
Masters Touch builds each wine room using redwood, which is the ideal wood for rooms that are climate controlled. The typical size of a wine room measures 12 by 12 sq. ft. or 12 by 16 sq. ft. and accommodates a racking system that holds 1,500 to 2,000 bottles.
Since extreme heat or cold is detrimental to the wine, the wine room must maintain temperature between 55-58 degrees and a relative humidity of 55 to 75 percent. Masters Touch installs a ductless refrigeration system in the wine room to maintain these ideal conditions.
For those who wish to turn their wine cellars into an art form, hand-painted tiles or decorative hardwood flooring and decorative ceilings may be installed. A tasting table, complete with customized tabletop may be desired for sampling. An artistic entryway or an etched glass door finishes off the entire design.
“A wine room will be appreciated by both wine collectors and novices and at the very least, makes for a terrific conversation piece,” noted Doug Masters, founder of Masters Touch.
