April 10, 2007 - Voting was simple – There were empty cartons with names of the bands on each carton. If you wanted to vote for a band – all you had to do was simply go and put your empty Beer Bottle in it.
Each band had 25 mins to woo their audience. WEHEM – Pune’s first Hindi Rock band were the first ones to get on stage. They enthralled the audience with songs like dumadum mast kalander, bande from the movie Black Friday, dosti and one original composition. The effort they put in really showed on stage. 4 piece band with the rhythm guitarist also singing – they were furious and filled with energy.
WOUNDED HEALERS were next. They take this name as they are studying medicine at the AFMC – one of India’s premier Medial institution for the Armed Forces. With loads of attitude, tons of talent and a hint of arrogance, they amazed their audience with toxicity, mamma I’m coming back to home, shipping off to Boston. The surprise was the Song BANDE – that was just covered by Wehem. Wounded Healers’ lead vocalist – Kaustubh, sarcastically remarked to the crowd ‘You’ll see who can sing this better’!
ILLUMINATI - the band from the BVP engg. College was up next. The only female singer in the show – Manavi, sang zombie with some attitude. After belting out Alive from Pearl Jam, Another brick in the wall, highway star, the crowd was clearly swooning.
The last to play were TREES ON FIRE. By this time, people had begun to get tired and they all sat down on the floor of the venue. Sameer, the MC, announced that the last act was totally worth it and all people should move closer to the stage. The crown obliged and they were awarded by a spectacular performance by Randhir on the Drums, Sharad on the Base, Robin on the Guitars and Sharad on vocals. Sharad’s antics on stage were a pleasure to watch. Totally electrifying, these guys have been playing for quite sometime and are well known in the Pune Rock Circle.
All in all, the Event was Rocking! The event was a Poora Poona™ initiative, organized by the Poora Poona™ team. Nikhil was the sound engineer and the equipment was provided by Marizban. Awards were sponsored by Furtados™ – one of the largest musical instruments store in Mumbai, Riffworks™ USA and Spykar™ Jeans. Event sponsors were Royal Enfield™ and Coca Cola™.
The Best Vocalist Award was taken away by Shivit from Illuminati. His rendition of Alive and Another Brick in the wall was too good for anyone else. Shivit is an Engineer from a Top Rung Engineering College in Pune.
The Best Guitarist Award was taken away by Robin from Trees on Fire. Robin wants to professionally take up music. He is quickly becoming very popular and has a great fan following in Pune.
The Best Drummer Award was taken away by Randhir from Trees on Fire. A veteran musician himself, Randhir has judged many competitions and is another famous musician in the Pune Rock circle.
The Best Bassist Award was taken away by Manan from Illuminati. Manan is an engineer aspiring to do his further studies in the US. Music is definitely his Passion.
The Best Band award was won by Wounded Healers. Their Team just could not hold back their joy and they literally poured onto the stage. Their enthusiasm was a sight. They are students of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College – the source of all the Medical Talent for the Armed Forces of India. One of the most Challenging Careers, it was good to see them excel at other fields as well.
