In 2006, global capacity stood at 36.41 million tons including 15.16 million tons of polyester staple fiber 21.25 million tons of polyester filament yarn. Between 1998 and 2006 polyester capacity was seen almost doubling of which a major portion came up in Asia. Today, almost 85% of staple fiber capacity and 89.5% of the PFY capacity is in Asia. India, Indonesia, South Korea and Taiwan are the other major producers of polyester in Asia. Outside Asia USA and Turkey are the only dominant producers

Consumption of polyester staple fiber has been seen increasing at an annual growth rate of 5.3% between 2000 and 2006. In 2006, it increased 11.4% to 11.3 million tons whereas supply increased simultaneously by 10.3% to 11.30 million tons. In the next six years upto 2012 an average production growth rate of 3.5% is expected in Asia, while a slower growth rate is projected in industrialized polyester fiber-consuming nations, at far lower volumes.
