May 30, 2007 - As a regular visitor to the beautiful coastal resort of Ayia Napa for the past ten years I am a firm favourate of this resort. It has everything, superb restaurants, a vast array of bars and some of the best nightclubs in the Mediterranean. The accommodation is also some of the best I have seen, certainly a lot better than Greece.
Having been around these parts for a few years now I am constantly meeting people and recently I happened upon a couple of guys that are opening a brand new nightclub in the center of Ayia Napa, I asked them why they think their club is going to be better than the others and why they feel Ayia Napa needs another club.
"Well Tom we feel that Ayia Napa needs a more generic appeal to the clubbing fraternity" says the PR guru known as djtonytonytony, renowned for his fantastic mixing abilities in Hersonissos, Crete in the late 1990's.
"The dj", as he is affectionately known these days does not pull any punches and is responsible for running the PLAY Nightclub website for e-Ticket bookings at http://playnightclub.bookmethatnight.com
"We are catering for many people this year and want to cover as many musical tastes as we possibly can, not everyone that comes to Napa (an affectionate name for the town) wants garage 24/7. People like the Ibiza vibe but to be honest with you it is far too up it's own arse these days."
As I said before the DJ does not hold back on his words.
I always thought that garage and R'n'B was the mainstay of Ayia Napa but having spoken to "the dj" for a while he paints a different picture. He continues, "We want to keep the garage vibe here in Napa but we also want to branch out to cover other genres, for example, we have pretty much everything at PLAY Nightclub this summer, from trance experts like Judge Jules to hard house specialists like Lisa Lashes. We also have Tall Paul, a firm favourate amongst the party posse and we also have MTV Dance filming here most weeks for their ubiquitous music channel. We have Heartless Crew residing every Thursday night and we are working on some Red Sea Pedestrians for some serious techno nights too."
Having spent one or two days with "the dj" it becomes apparent that he knows what he is doing and what direction he wants this latest superclub in Ayia Napa to go. As I said before, the vibe in Ibiza is pretty much the same year-on-year, Ayia Napa offers something new without the pretentious vibe associated with the dance fraternity that is found in Ibiza. Having been shown around the club it is clear to see that these guys mean business, the place has been fully refurbished and the acoustics guy is in there tweaking the superb sound system, the nightclub is officially opening on 26th June 2007 with none other than Judge Jules opening up. I ask "the dj" what he thinks about having such a massive name onboard for the official opening night.
He replies, "We are honoured to have so many massive names playing at our club this summer, a lot of hard work has been put into getting this right, as the man in charge of pre-bookings I know that most of our main events are going to be sold out and we are happy to be able to offer them discounts on booking e-Tickets before they arrive in the resort to secure their nights. Nothing makes me more happy than making someone's night, I remember in my old DJing days I could make a crowd melt with my superb mixing abilities, I might have been as big as Judge Jules if it wasn't for the fact that I chose to become a PR guru."
Well the place certainly is coming on and the interior is looking superb, with just over 3 weeks until their unofficial opening night on 22nd June 2007 it looks like everything is falling nicely into place, set on two levels with an additional outdoor terrace there is plenty of space and it looks like this club is going to be a summer sensation. I have seen many clubs come and go but I am impressed with the dedication and hard work that has been put into making this club happen.
Having taken a sneak peek at their summer lineup of DJs and events I am confident that this club is going to blow the competition away, this can only be fantastic news for all the visitors to Ayia Napa this summer.
I am a freelance journalist and will be here in Ayia Napa for the next six weeks, I will be submitting more press releases from this wonderful resort in the very near future.
