May 22, 2009 - Knowledge of the migratory routes of wildfowl – particularly duck – is essential to inform the international community and enable the preparation of these strategies. Wild bird screening programmes are an essential part of the planning process – and they may require people to be trained in the capture and handling of wildfowl.
RPS ornithological consultants have internationally recognised expertise in wild bird surveillance programmes and RPS was therefore commissioned – with European Union funding – to help with the provision of avian influenza preparedness training in Turkey. A senior RPS consultant recently went there to train local teams of ornithologists and veterinarians in the use of cannon nets for capturing wildfowl. Cannon netting involves attaching a net to projectiles, which are fired from small, cannon-like launchers. The projectiles pull the net in a high arc over the birds – and as it settles, the net gently entraps them for examination and subsequent release.
The course took place on the Black Sea coast at Samsun and the adjacent Kizilirmak delta, the latter recognised for supporting internationally important populations of waterfowl – and having a high incidence of avian influenza amongst poultry.
