Philadelphia VIP Receives $21,000 Grant from The Philadelphia Foundation

The Philadelphia Foundation awarded Philadelphia VIP a $21,000 grant to fund legal services for low-income individuals in the Philadelphia-area.


Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) June 17, 2009 - Philadelphia VIP, a non-profit legal services agency in Philadelphia, has received a $21,000 grant from The Walter E. Hering Fund #2, the Henry Griffith and Anna Griffith Keasbey Fund, the Lillian Gest Memorial Fund, and the William P. Gest Memorial Fund #2, of the Philadelphia Foundation to support its general operations.

Announcement of the grant was made by R. Andrew Swinney, President of the Foundation, whose Board of Managers approved the grant on May 8, 2009.

Sara Woods, Executive Director of Philadelphia VIP, said the funds would be used to support VIP’s efforts to secure pro bono representation for low-income Philadelphians. “With the help of The Philadelphia Foundation, during this challenging economic climate Philadelphia VIP can focus its efforts on addressing the critical legal needs of low-income individuals.”

Philadelphia VIP, the hub of pro bono in Philadelphia, was founded in 1981 by the Philadelphia Bar Association and Community Legal Services to meet the legal needs of low-income Philadelphians by recruiting and training attorneys to provide pro bono legal services. Today, VIP serves more than 1,500 clients with legal issues that affect basic human needs.

The Philadelphia Foundation, a public charity, is Southeastern Pennsylvania’s leading center for community philanthropic engagement and is committed to improving the quality of life in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties through funds established by its donors. Established in 1918, The Philadelphia Foundation continues to help donors harness their generosity and vision by providing tools, knowledge, and financial stewardship directed to maximize the strategic impact of charitable contributions.

Grants from more than 775 charitable funds strengthen the effectiveness of nonprofits and support programs that are vital to the people of this region.
