April 05, 2007 - New landscape paintings of northern California by Phil Gross will be exhibited at the John Natsoulas Gallery from March 28th through April 21st. A reception for the artist including music and beverages takes place on Saturday April 7th, from 7pm to 9pm. The public is invited.
Mr. Gross' work includes oil paintings of the Sacramento Valley and the city of San Francisco. His compositions are noted for their unique perspectives, often sighting down the center of a irrigation canal, a country road, a line of telephone poles or just as often from an aerial viewpoint about 300 feet above ground. Either way, his saturated palette and telescopic compression of scenery gives his work a signature look, a sense of the great valley we live in. A former geologist, he is keen on maps and each painting is accompanied with specific map coordinates. Much of his work in this show is based on the county roads between Winters, Davis and Woodland.
This year Gross is selected to be part of the prestigious
“2007 Yosemite Artist in Residence Program”.
