"To become a Grand Chef is undoubtedly the highlight of my career! To be acknowledged in this manner is a very proud moment for me and the team at The Cellars-Hohenort. It is also a very humbling experience for me, as I am aware of the responsibility which comes with the title… to Liz McGrath, my team and ultimately to all of our guests. I look forward to this challenge and putting Cape Town firmly on the map as a world class gastronomic destination!" says Peter Tempelhoff.
Peter Tempelhoff joins fellow Grand Chef Margot Janse of Le Quartier Français and the late Franck Zlomke to become South Africa's third Grand Chef and Cape Town City's first!
"Over the years my food has become simpler; it has become more focused on textures and singular flavours. I would like to think that it is going to become more of an expression of how I interpret Modernist Southern African Cuisine and less of an attempt to follow in current food trends and fads" adds Peter.
Owner of The Cellars-Hohenort, Liz McGrath, has been a proud member of the Relais & Châteaux for 20 years this November. "I can't think of a bigger honour to celebrate my 20 years with Relais & Châteaux than being awarded Grand Chef status. It is what we have dreamed of for many, many years! I am so extremely proud of Peter and his talented team at The Cellars-Hohenort and The Greenhouse restaurant. We look forward to welcoming guests from all over the world to experience South Africa and the finest South African cuisine" says Liz McGrath.
The Greenhouse, the flagship restaurant of The Collection by Liz McGrath, is open from Tuesday to Saturday in the evenings. Guests can choose to experience a 7 course tasting menu or they can create their own 4 course menu.
"This summer we unite quail, nasturtiums and green almonds together in a dish, as well as roast duck, bergamot and mulberries. Desserts are moving a little towards vegetables, with a combination of white asparagus, raspberries & chamomile, one featuring butternut, lime and coconut and another with smoked chocolate, candy cane beetroot and cherries. With the abundant ingredients in Cape Town, The Greenhouse is an exciting place to cook and create!" concludes Peter.
