For more than a decade, the GEF/UNDP/IMO Regional Programme on Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) has been active in protecting life-support systems and enabling the sustainable use and management of coastal and marine resources through intergovernmental, interagency and multisectoral partnerships. In the course of its 14-year operation, the Programme has developed management -related methodologies, techniques, working models and standards to strengthen practical efforts in the field.

	PEMSEA has announced today that former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos will deliver the opening keynote address during East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2009 to be held in Manila, Philippines on 23-27 November.

25 FEB	Manila Bay’s Operational Plan Set In Action
	The Operational Plan of the Manila Bay Coastal Strategy (OPMBCS) will serve as the roadmap in the management and protection of the Manila Bay as promulgated in the Philippine Supreme Court ruling “to clean up, rehabilitate and preserve Manila Bay.”

	A consensus was reached during the recently concluded 2nd East Asian Seas Partnership Council Meeting to undertake a more extensive review and knowledge sharing on the trends, impacts, benefits and good approaches related to these issues at the East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2009.

14 OCT	Manila Bay Joins International Coastal Clean Up
	More than 2,000 volunteers joined in cleaning up Manila Bay as part of the 2008 International Coastal Clean up Day celebration held on 20 September.

08 JUL	Securing the Oceans - Essays on Ocean Governance Published Jointly by PEMSEA and Nippon Foundation
	Published a decade after the 1998 Year of the Ocean, the 25-chapter Securing the Oceans: Essays on Ocean Governance is primarily aimed at increasing the awareness of the general public on coasts and oceans and at strengthening their understanding of the functioning of the ocean, land-sea interactions, ocean dynamics and ecosystem functioning.

	PEMSEA has announced the designation of Mr. Raphael P.M. Lotilla as the new Executive Director of the PEMSEA Resource Facility (PRF).
