March 24, 2007 - NEW YORK CITY, Mar. 23 - The Porta-Track Personal Tracker, distributed by Porta-Track Systems, is a tiny, battery operated tracking device that can be placed almost anywhere in a vehicle, inside or out, and automatically records where the vehicle was driven, where it stopped and for how long, and even how fast the car was driven. Using satellite tracking technology to determine its precise location, it records this data into its built-in memory and stores it. When finished, the device is removed from the vehicle and plugged into a computer, where the data is automatically downloaded and plotted onto a street level map for viewing.
For parents of teenage drivers, the information gathered can vital.
According to a 2005 survey of 1,000 drivers age 15 to 17, conducted by the Allstate Foundation, an organization funded by subsidiaries of The Allstate Corporation, 56% of young drivers use cell phones while driving, 69% said they speed to keep up with traffic, and 64% said they speed to go through a yellow light. According to the NHTSA, 23% of teen drivers killed in 2005 were intoxicated. Finally, national statistics list motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death for teenagers.
The need then, for parents to constantly monitor their children's driving habits is clear. With this technology in hand, parents can see exactly where their kids have been, whether they stopped at a bar or club for several hours before getting back into their vehicle, even how fast they drove.
The point is not so they can punish their children, but more as a way to be able to sit down with them and intelligently lay down some ground rules without fears of false accusations. If there's a problem, parents can find out sooner and hopefully do something about it before a tragedy occurs.
"With this type of technology, privacy concerns are certain to arise" notes Raymond Stone, Director of Marketing for Porta-Track Systems, "so we actually suggest that parents inform their children beforehand - let them know that they are putting a tracking device into the vehicle. Knowing that their parents are monitoring them, teens will be more likely avoid bad behavior in the first place. It even gives them a good excuse should their friends try to encourage them to drive recklessly."
