  • (1888PressRelease) September 19, 2016 - The National Pardon Center, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, would like to inform the Canadian public that changes are expected to be made to the national pardons program. Currently, there are quite a few hefty obstacles in the Canadian Pardons Program right now. For instance, citizens wishing to have their records suspended or forgiven so that they can obtain a new job, move to a new home, or cross the border, they are going to have to pay large amounts and waiting for up to a decade. As of right now, the filing fee for a pardon application costs $631, a huge departure from the original price of $50. At over six-hundred dollars, the filing fee is much too large a sum for most Canadian citizens to apply for a records suspension or United States entry waiver. When you consider that many people are trying to move abroad or improve their living conditions, the $631 that stands in their way just seems disproportionately unfair.

The National Pardon Center would like to announce that changes are expected. Under the direction of the Minister of Public Safety, Ralph Goodale, the costs are set to decrease. Moreover, the current waiting periods are anticipated to decrease as well. Currently, Canadian residents who have an indicted offence on their permanent record need to wait 10 years for their suspension or waiver application to be processed and reviewed. The waiting period for those with a summary offence is 5 years. Both of these waiting periods are long swaths of time in which these citizens could be bettering their lives and the lives of their families.

It is the hope of Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale and the National Pardon Center that the necessary changes will be put into effect as soon as possible. Besides fully supporting Minister Goodale's proclamation that the current prices and waiting periods are "punitive", the National Pardon Center continues to do their best to support and assist Canadians who are looking for a suspended record or a waived entry in the United States.
