June 26, 2008 - Wolong Panda Migration to Bifengxia and other places after Earth Quake.
The Wenchuan Earthquake caused 17 panda enclosures destroyed in Wolong, so no saft panda enclosures for panda living in Wolong, the Pandas must migrate to other places.
As it to plan, Wolong pandas migrated, be moved, be sent to Bifengxia Base, 6 pandas on 23May, 13 pandas on 18June 2008, ana about 27 captive pandas will migrate to Bifengxia in June and July 2008.
And about 17 captive pandas in Wolong will move to Chengdu Panda base, Fuzhou Panda center, Panyu Wildlif Park, Yunnan Wildlife Panda Park.
And 8 Olympic Pandas already moved to Beijing Zoo on 24May.
So only 6 baby pandas (born in 2007) left in Wolong for care raising.
Also almost all panda research staff will go to Bifengxia for working, because the panda facilities reconstruction plan to start sooner in Huangcaoping area.
And originally all panda volunteer trip arranged in Wolong, and from now on, all panda voluntary work will arranged in Bifengxia only.
In this earthquake, total one panda death, two pandas injuried, one panda missing.
As to the wild panda and nature reserves: About the wild panda, almost about 1590 wild pandas in China, and no dead body reported in one month after earthquake took place.
This earthquake affected panda nature reserves: total about 19 panda nature reserves were much destroyed. Pandas' enclosure (panda house) + wildlife house were destroyed about 38000 square meters, forests destroyed 328,667 hectares, Sichuan forests covering rate adjusted down by 0.5%, and disatered area by 1.87%. Panda habitat destroyed 120,000 hectares. And it needs about 20-30 years for the nature reserve (forests and plants) to be recovered to the same level before earthquake took.
In coming years' winters, the wild panda's food maybe shortened due to earthquake affects.
