  • Boulder, CO (1888PressRelease) March 27, 2014 - PANalytical Boulder, formerly ASD Inc., developer of high-performance analytical instrumentation and materials analysis solutions, announced today the winners of the 2014 Students in Mining TerraSpec Instrument Program.

Four Ph.D. candidates in relevant fields of study have been granted the temporary use of a TerraSpec 4 mineral analyzer and The Spectral Geologist (TSG®) Pro mineral analysis software. Additionally, recipients are entitled to a single $500 travel stipend to attend a one-day feasibility and modeling training session at PANalytical Boulder's headquarters in Boulder, Colo. (USA).

The TerraSpec 4 mineral analyzer uses flexible, near-infrared spectroscopy to measure a wide variety of samples, offering better visibility for students conducting mineral analysis as part of their mining, energy or geothermal research. The TSG software uses the high- quality spectral data captured using the TerraSpec 4 to easily sort and analyze mineral data.

Each student winner was selected based on the creative application of the TerraSpec 4's capabilities to their research projects. Recipients of the TerraSpec 4 and their research topics within mining and energy include:

    Somayeh Hosseininejad, Ph.D. candidate
Department of Geoscience, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Proposal title: 'Integrated mineralogy, geochemistry and sedimentation, second white speckled shale, western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, Canada'

    Jacob Longridge, Ph.D. candidate
Imperial College, South Kensington Campus, London, UK
Proposal title: 'Investigations and clay mineral quantification in porphyry to epithermal transition'

    Volker Möller, Ph.D. candidate
Earth & Planetary Sciences, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Proposal title: 'The nature and origin of the Nechalacho Rare Metal Deposit'

    Darina Štyriaková, Ph.D. candidate
Institute of Geotechnics SAS, Košice, Slovakia
Proposal title: 'Rocks and minerals weathering by indigenous heterotrophic bacteria in nature'

"We are excited to award these four winners with our high-performance analytical instrumentation, which will help drive innovative student research in the mining community" said Chris Sherry, geologist and senior mining market manager at PANalytical Boulder. "We hope our program will continue to grow as students seek out our instrumentation to help facilitate advancements in the mining community."
