January 27, 2008 - OUR COUNTRY HAS GONE TO THE DOGS……
And isn’t that wonderful!! The country has gone to the dogs, and the cats, and the birds, reptiles, small animals and fish. Our country loves pets of all type. With 113 million households in our country, we find that over 71 million households, or approximately 63%, have at least one pet. Our pet population has grown to 212 million, not including the 149 million fresh and saltwater fish, and over 13 million equines.
Even if you are not a pet owner, you will probably find that to be an interesting statistic. The pet dog population is up 16% over the last 3 years, and the pet cat population has increased by 14%. Although the pet bird population is down 4%, pet reptiles increased by 22% and the small pet animals up 8%.
According to the APPMA statistics on spending ("Pet Industry Statistics and Trends"), Americans spent 34.4 billion dollars on their pets in 2004, and they estimated that $40.8 billion was spent on our pets in the U.S. in 2007.
Pet owners have become far more concerned and responsible in the past years about pet over population. We now find that seventy-five percent of owned dogs are spayed or neutered, and eighty-seven percent of owned cats are spayed or neutered.
With all the bad publicity we have seen about dog fighting, and dog attacks, more people are training their dog to make it a better, safer, and more enjoyable pet. A popular TV show about dog training, that airs regularly, has people realizing that dogs can be trained. It’s not just german shepherds, pit bulls, and rottweilers. Labradors, retrievers, collies, and poodles all make better pets when they are trained. You may enjoy reading about my “Yorkshire Terrier From Hell”, and how my wife and I trained him to be a better pet. It’s on my blog:
