March 31, 2007 - A literature student from the University of San Carlos, Cebu City, Philippines, won the 1st Gullas Intercollegiate Oratorical Contest held at the Ecotech Center in Lahug yesterday.
Oscar Lim-Fudalan Jr. of the USC-Department of Languages and Literature bagged first place in the oratorical tilt besting seven other schools that competed in the event.
Fudalan received a trophy and a PhP10,000 cash prize.
Bryan Briones of the University of San Jose-Recoletos garnered second place and received a trophy and PhP7,500 while Michael Nicolas Malazarte of the Cebu Institute of Technology, who made it to the third place received a trophy and a cash prize of PhP5,000.
Lawyer Joseph Basuel, Vice-President for External Affairs of the University of the Visayas, said that the holding of the Gullas oratorical contest honors the 117th birth anniversary of the late Don Vicente Gullas, the founder of the University of the Visayas.
Following the teachings of the late Don Vicente, the contest took his philosophy "Love is the greatest law of life and service is the best test of manhood" for a theme.
Members of the board of judges were Johnny Uy, the incoming first Asian and Filipino president of the Toastmasters Club International and president of Rositas Fuente, The Freeman Lifestyle executive editor Marlinda Angbetic-Tan, socialite Chinggay Utzurrum, the past president of Toastmasters Club-city chapter; and Fermin Chio, also the past president of Toastmasters-city chapter.
Other universities that competed in the said event were the University of the Philippines, Cebu Normal University, Cebu Doctors' University, St. Theresa's College, and Southwestern University.
