It was started in the year 2002 by a group of like-minded IIT alumni that included Rajat Gupta, Gururaj 'Desh' Deshpande, N R Narayanamurthy, Nandan Nilekani, Ashank Desai and Pradeep Gupta. Other alumni who have been crucial to the success of PanIIT are Arjun Malhotra, Raj Singh, Kanwal Rekhi, Vinod Gupta, Abhay Bhushan, Pawan Kumar, Sanjiv Sahay, Suresh Shenoy, Monishi Sanyal, Ram Kelkar and Hiten Ghosh.
