January 20, 2009 - These must-see landmarks are an essential part of any walking tour. Indeed, any architectural buff will marvel at the confluence of World Heritage sites, European architecture and Chinese buildings that Macau has to offer.
The city became the 31st designated World Heritage site in China in 2005 when it joined the UNESCO World Heritage list and 25 of its building and sites now have “protected” status.
A-Ma Temple, one of the oldest and most famous structures in Macau, was built in 1488. Situated on the southwest tip of the Macau Peninsula, it is dedicated to the goddess of seafarers and fishermen, Matsu. The Ruins of St. Paul's refer to the façade of what was originally the Cathedral of St. Paul; a 17th century Portuguese cathedral dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle.
Another must-see, although not cloaked in old-world charm is The Macau Tower, Billed as the 10th-highest freestanding tower in the world at 1,109 feet, its main observation level is 732 feet high. Protective gear is provided if you want to stroll out on to the outer deck, where you will be greeted with a wonderful and windy view of Macau and the Pearl River. Also located within a 2km distance of the hotel are Dr. Sun Yaet Sen’s House, and the Maritime Museum.
