November 02, 2007 - Toledo, OH. -- The Toledo-based Ohio Trojans collegiate baseball team has joined with the Lake Erie Monarchs baseball organization to form the Ohio Monarchs baseball team. The Ohio Monarchs team will be independent of the Lake Erie Monarchs team and will play in the Tri-State League, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The league also includes teams from Cleveland, Youngstown and Columbus. Each distinct team functions independently as far as scheduling and player recruitment are concerned, but works with other league teams to maintain a high level play.
The Lake Erie Monarchs play in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, which is a non- profit corporation that strives to have a positive impact on the lives of young men, while helping them to become top caliber baseball players. The league also provides young players with exposure to Major League scouts.
“I welcome the opportunity to strengthen our presence in Northwest Ohio and further serve college baseball players,” said Jim DeSana, General Manager of the Lake Erie Monarchs. The two teams will fill a void in Northwest Ohio for quality college summer baseball.”
“We are thrilled and honored to be affiliated with an organization that is all about the players,” added Steve Timofeev, General Manager of the Ohio Monarchs.
The Ohio Monarchs will defend their CABA World Series Championship in Elgin, Illinois during the 2008 season. “The association with the Lake Erie Monarchs will provide quality opportunities for highly committed college baseball players,” said Timofeev. The Ohio Monarchs will bring back the coaching staff of Rodney Gabriel, Tim Matthews and Aaron Myers. New to the staff this year will be Ed Mouch.
The 2008 season begins the first week of June and runs through the first week of August. The Lake Erie Monarchs will play home games at Bowling Green State University. The Ohio Monarchs will play home games at Ouskie Field in Oregon, Ohio and in the city of Toledo.
