May 08, 2009 - MoreThanGrades offering scholarships to local high school students
It was a cold January night in 2007 when New York University student Michael Rosich engaged his parents in a discussion about the college application process.
With input from his parents, both educators, the younger Rosich realized there was a lack of personal contact and communication between potential students and the colleges to which they applied. He wondered how to draw attention to the individual student, not the faceless applicant.
Rosich concluded that high school graduates can’t be defined solely by their numbers. They are, as his new Web site suggests, more than grades.
“Our goal is not only to simplify the college search process, but to start a dialogue between colleges and students in a professional and meaningful way,” Rosich said. “High school students do most of their research online; it is only natural that finding information about college would be done there also.”
Rosich wants that conversation to start in earnest, which is why MoreThanGrades (MTG) is offering a $250 scholarship opportunity to one student from each high school in the tri-state area with the most complete MTG profile. Several schools are already using the site, including Archbishop Stepinac, Rosich’s alma mater in White Plains, and Kennedy Catholic in Somers.
“As a junior at NYU, I am grateful for all the support and guidance I received from my high school teachers, guidance counselors, and principal,” Rosich said. “This is just my way of saying thanks.”
Among the many tools MTG offers is “one word, one search, one million (plus) scholarship search.” Simply by entering the word “scholarship” as a search term at MoreThanGrades.com, any college that offers a scholarship will return a result. If students want to narrow their search, they can easily do so by adding a second search term such as a major or specific geographic area.
Rosich notes that while many sites offer the ability to search for scholarships most contain obstacles to getting information such as lengthy questionnaires and distracting ads. Using the MoreThanGrades.com search engine, scholarships that often go undiscovered can now be easily found. Plus, MTG makes it easy to for students to find all the information they need about their favorite colleges and universities—majors, virtual tours, videos, campus news and events, photos—all on a single page.
To help get students started, MTG is giving all new members a free copy of the e-book “Navigating the Financial Aid Maze.” This brief and concise e-book offers tips and strategies on the financial aid process.
“The college application process can be very stressful,” Rosich notes. “We are just trying to make it a little easier”
