  • Binghamton, NY (1888PressRelease) July 02, 2014 - During the month of June, the National Aphasia Association (NAA) honors Aphasia Awareness Month in support for those living with the disease. Being that aphasia primarily affects the elderly, The Allure Group is proud to assist community efforts in raising awareness to numerous initiatives and programs that educate the public about Aphasia and its effects.

Aphasia is a language disorder usually initiated by a stroke causing one to begin having difficulty remembering words, losing the ability to speak, read and write. While aphasia is most common among elderly individuals it can affect people of all ages and gender. Aphasia can take on many different forms and can be as severe as to cause one to lose the ability to communicate, or as mild as to result in one forgetting certain words or names. A full recovery from aphasia is possible in some cases, though if the symptoms last longer than 2 months after the initial stroke a complete recovery is unlikely.

Throughout June the NAA will teach the public techniques on how to communicate with those affected by aphasia in addition to bringing the issue to national attention. Currently about one million Americans are affected, with those numbers increasing as 200,000 develop the disorder every year. Aphasia is more common than Parkinson's disease and cerebral palsy, yet most people have never heard of it. "Aphasia unfortunately strikes the elderly more than any other population and is growing in terms of the number of individuals affected. We at The Allure Group wholeheartedly support the efforts of the NAA and those searching for a cure. It is our mission to spread awareness and to help educate the community," remarked Melissa Guglielmo, Chief Operating Officer at The Allure Group.
