May 02, 2009 - KANSAS CITY, MO. – The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, has developed a Problem Account Database to help its members avoid scams, deadbeat vendors and other billing problems.
"We've all heard stories about the bad eggs in the industry who have bilked our honest hard-working members out of thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA. "They prey on unknowing suppliers for equipment and then make it a habit to be extremely slow pay, or no pay. One of the things those bad eggs count on is the lack of communication throughout the industry. Therefore, they can dial up their next victim with confidence that their misdeeds have not been reported and continue their scams across the country."
The Problem Account Database aims to change that. Members can search for the names of companies to determine if other members have had fraud, money collection or other accounting problems with them in the past. The NPSA relies on its members to submit new entities into the Problem Account Database, including bankruptcies, collection payments, NSF checks, final demands, broken promises, skips, past due over 90 days, payment plan and many other status changes.
"We look forward to saving our members the thousands of dollars that could be lost in a single fraudulent transaction," said Joel Rathbone, Operations Manager for the NPSA. "Industry-wide participation in this database will significantly reduce the possibility of being a victim of these scammers and take a bite out of their business."
