April 04, 2007 - Sherbondy deconstructs and recreates many of our best-loved fairy tales with twists and turns that include: Viagra in Fairy Land; Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, suffering from weight fluctuations and alcoholism; and Snow White at Planned Parenthood because the Prince has no health insurance.
Maureen A. Sherbondy, is an award-winning poet and fiction writer, from Raleigh, North Carolina. Her poems have won The Lyricist Statewide Poetry Prize, The Charlotte Writers’ Club Deane Rich Lomax Poetry Prize, and also the 2007 Hart Crane Memorial Award (Kent State University). In these modern day reality fairy tales Cinderella marries the Prince and discovers he has a shoe fetish; bored at the country club, Cinderella shows up at Arcade Palace to find excitement; and Snow White in Midlife has wild dreams. These fairy tale poems mirror the anguish of many American readers: boredom, the search for excitement, alcoholism, and discontent.
Sherbondy says, “Despite the fairy tale like cover, After the Fairy Tale is not for children.” In these accessible modern day fairy tales, Maureen Sherbondy finds a topic we can all relate to.
