June 07, 2007 - Norfolk Arts Partnership and Norfolk Tourism are promoting four postcards featuring new work by local artists, including digital versions at www.visitnorfolk.co.uk/arts. Great Yarmouth Beach and Britannia Pier, Norwich City Centre, Salthouse Church on the North Norfolk Coast and Wymondham Abbey are the places that have inspired artists Anne Christie, Lys Flowerday, Clare Johnson and Esther Morgan.
The free postcards can be picked up at galleries and tourist information centres throughout Norfolk. Visitors can also send the digital postcards to friends and relatives via visitnorfolk.co.uk/arts, encouraging recipients to look at Norfolk in a new way.
Anne Christie’s ‘At The Still Point’ is a photograph showing Wymondham Abbey reflected in a lens. The abbey is celebrating its 900th anniversary this year. Anne Christie explained: “It takes time to get to know the subtle stories of the Norfolk landscape, calling for ways of looking more slowly.”
Clare Johnson’s colourful print of Great Yarmouth, ‘Looking North towards Britannia Pier’, takes in: “The sweep of sun drenched golden sand. The swoop of the pier as it thrusts out to sea. The blue sky framed by architectural lampposts.”
Lys Flowerday describes her vibrant collage of Norwich City Centre, which focuses on The Market and The Forum as: “A theatre of contrasts layering modern-day arena and ancient weave of streets, open parade and hidden vignette, preoccupied walkers, seated talkers, reflections of glass meeting with stories in stone.”
The fourth postcard includes an evocative poem by Esther Morgan called ‘Lighthouse, at Salthouse Church’.
David Farmer, Norfolk Arts Partnership said: “Our aim with these commissions was to capture the inspiration that artists find in Norfolk’s varied landscapes and inspire others to come here to see these places for themselves. The results have produced a perfect mix of city, coast and countryside that reflects Norfolk’s independent spirit and desire to ‘do different’.”
Crispian Emberson, Norfolk Tourism Director added: “The new postcard art is a wonderful way to promote Norfolk’s beautiful countryside and amazing architectural heritage and provides an excellent alternative view of the county’s attractions.”
