New York, NY (1888PressRelease)
April 09, 2008 - New York Environmentalists for Obama are doing what they can to get the word out about the presidential hopeful. They’ve organized a number of events to promote Obama’s campaign, and two such events have to do with used cell phones. Everyone’s got one, right? Many people are unaware that old cell phones can be used to save the environment and to raise funds.
New York Environmentalists for Obama will be collecting used and unwanted cell phones at two of their upcoming events in New York. Cell phones and their batteries can be donated at the Manhattan City Hall Rally for Barack Obama, Saturday, April 12. They can also be donated at Central Park’s Earth Day celebration at the Columbus Circle entrance on 59th Street at Central Park West, Sunday, April 20. The funds raised will go directly to the Obama campaign. (Visit http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/fundraising/4rjy8 for more information).
The donated cell phones are sent to recycling giant Pace Butler Corporation of Edmond, Okla. Pace Butler (http://www.pacebutler.com) sends a check for the value of the phones within four business days and pays for all shipping costs while providing free collection boxes for the organization to use.
Nearly 200 million Americans own cell phones, with about 500,000 people replacing old cell phones with new ones each day. Rough estimates indicate there are more than 130 million used wireless phones discarded every year. By donating cell phones to Environmentalists for Obama, not only are you raising money for the candidate, you’re also saving the environment from thousands of tons of toxic waste that might otherwise simply end up in landfills.
Pace Butler Corporation ensures that each phone is recycled in a responsible manner and that no phone ever ends up in a landfill. Some phones are even donated to individuals in need of emergency 911 service, including victims of domestic violence and senior citizens.
