February 12, 2008 - Today, John Best, President of ToucanMultimedia.com, announced the anticipated release of a new version of WebPen. The WebPen, web application allows online documents to be signed on websites in the traditional manner with a hand-written signature, drawn using the mouse as a pen.
The use of paperless documents with electronic signatures is rapidly increasing on the internet because it avoids lost sales due to the delay and hassle required to print, sign and fax paper documents.
The introduction of WebPen in 2006, heralded a better alternative to PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) or “digital signature” schemes that have been touted by their developers as an alternative to the traditional hand written signature. PKI systems have been slow to gain acceptance in E-commerce due to several inherent problems: the scheme uses long, complex, passwords that must be stored somewhere, and are therefore susceptible to theft; PKI is shrouded in confusing terminology, and it depends on a third party certificate authority to which fees must be paid, and who could go out of business at any time.
WebPen is fast becoming the method of choice for authenticating online documents because it builds upon centuries of tradition and legal precedent, it is fast, simple, doesn’t confuse the user, and it creates a permanent signature image. Additionally, as companies move to paperless accounting and commerce, WebPen facilitates backend operations by eliminating the need to scan documents, since the signature is already in digital form. The new version, WebPen 1.02, features a larger signature, signature verification, easier installation, and other improvements.
Those interested in WebPen for use on a website, or would just like a glimpse at the future of E-commerce can try WebPen online, or download a demo version at http://www.toucanmultimedia.com.
