New Report Says The Nicotine Dependence Prescription Drug Market Will Hit $4.6 Billion By 2016

Nicotine vaccines are set to make a substantial impact on the market, offering patients a convenient dosing regimen and carrying the potential for improved compliance, says the report.

(1888PressRelease) January 26, 2008 - Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has added a new report which predicts that the nicotine dependence prescription drug market to grow to $4.6 billion across the seven major markets by 2016.

"Pipeline Insight: Substance Dependence - Part I: Nicotine" which is available at www.reportbuyer.com/go/DAT08409 finds that the high prevalence of nicotine dependence, strong uptake of Pfizer's Chantix (varenicline), and the launch of new innovative therapies will cause this growth in the underdeveloped market.

The report says currently, the prescription market is underdeveloped with only two marketed products. However, nicotine vaccines are set to make a substantial impact on the market, offering patients a convenient dosing regimen and so carrying the potential for improved compliance, it finds.

Authors of the report say that the most intriguing candidates in the current pipeline are vaccines which are designed to prevent nicotine from entering the brain, which means they reduce the pleasurable effect of smoking. They note, however, that the utility of vaccines in nicotine dependence lies in the long-term protection offered along with improved patient compliance.

The report forecasts that the drug NIC-002’s generation of a high immunological response and strong efficacy will lead to a strong uptake and that this drug is forecast to achieve sales of $1.3 billion by 2016. It also finds that Sanofi-Aventis is keen to penetrate this market and possesses two compounds in late-stage development for the treatment of nicotine dependence. Although these have a similar mechanism of action to Chantix, analysts believe that their shorter treatment course will lend them a strong competitive advantage.

The study profiles key compounds in development for use in nicotine dependence, with forecasts of drug revenues to 2016. It also contains an overview of the current nicotine dependence market, covering both prescription and OTC products and examines drugs in late stage clinical development for nicotine dependence.
