November 20, 2007 - “Sid is a member of the species Tyrannosocus sox. They commonly live in houses with washing machines where they look for food. They are friendly but shy when spotted”.
That’s how this odd creature is described in the first lines of “Sid, the sock-eating monster”, Awen Little’s last book.
Sid is a sweet green monster teaching the days of the week and names of colours with very funny rhymes and a fast pace so that it is easy for children to remember the words used and the story itself. Yet, what Awen tended to accomplish in writing the book was also to find something that could be nice for parents, too. Many comments from readers confirm that she got the right elements in the right place.
The book is addressed to children, and because of its straightforwardness and efficacy, it might be useful either at schools or for parents, too.
Sid is a cheerful monster who doesn’t really frighten and just makes little kids wonder where all those lost socks go.
Awen Little has written songs and verses for pleasure for many years especially since she had her two daughters, which makes her realise how to actually talk with children. She writes in both English and Welsh, her first language.
She is now at her first children’s story to get published even if over the years, she has imagined many tales that could be turned into children’s books, mainly because of her constant reading others’ stories to her own children.
The text in the book is completed by nice drawings which describe the monster as an odd little creature whom every child would get curious about. The whole story gets very effective, then, not only because of its simplicity but also because of the efficacy of illustrator Therese James’ work. She is an accomplished and widely exhibited artist. Awen loved the quirky humour in her work and was delighted when she agreed to illustrate Sid. Therese's work can be seen on www.Artcymru.co.uk under the Artists' gallery.
The book is published by Authorhouse and it is available on Amazon.co.uk at £9.99.
