New Reflection For IBM 2007 - Security Conscious Emulation

CoreSight, Australian partners with Attachmate, announce that Reflection for IBM 2007 is available today. This version builds upon the security features of existing versions (including Reflecion for UNIX & OpenVMS, Reflection for HP and Reflection X), and helps address internal audits and regulatory requirements such as SOX, PCI, Basel II and the proposed Australian Privacy Act changes.

(1888PressRelease) December 18, 2007 - CoreSight partners, Attachmate Corporation recently announced the availability of Reflection for IBM 2007, the first of their next generation, built-for-Vista terminal emulation solution. The release continues the theme of emulation that is security-focused yet still delivers productivity benefits for users and manageability options for administrators.

Combining the comprehensive productivity and security feature sets found in Attachmate’s existing EXTRA!, Reflection and INFOConnect host access offerings, Reflection for IBM 2007 strengthens mainframe security, maximizes IT flexibility and provides a set of features that significantly boost user productivity.

Reflection for IBM 2007 is certified for Windows Vista and takes advantage of multiple enhancements found in the operating system. The new version also provides support for Windows XP and the Microsoft 2007 Office system.

Strengthening mainframe security

Reflection’s market-leading security options provide the maximum level of protection for mission-critical host data. No other terminal emulation vendor can boast the breadth or depth of Attachmate’s security offering. This applies, not only to Reflection for IBM 2007 but the whole range including in Reflection for UNIX & OpenVMS, Reflection for HP, Reflection X, EXTRA!, INFOConnect and Reflection for the Web.

And Reflection for IBM 2007 builds upon the security focus, offering security features and functionality to help customers safeguard private data, shore up network defenses and meet increasingly stringent regulatory requirements.

For the technologists, there’s client-side support for SSL/TLS, whilst SSH, Kerberos and SOCKS security protocols are included within Reflection for IBM 2007. Also included are cryptographic modules built to meet US Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 and Department of Defense (DoD) Class 3 PKI Public Key-Enabled (PKE) application requirements.

For the rest of us, this helps clients address internal audit recommendations, and meet any applicable regulatory requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley, the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard, Basel II, and the Australian Privacy Act if and when the proposed changes are implemented.
There are also privacy filters protect sensitive host data from invasion or theft, whilst Reflection is also capable of leveraging existing directories and identity management systems to automatically authenticate users.

Boosting end-user productivity

But there’s not really much point in using a secure emulator that doesn’t meet its basic purpose. With this in mind Reflection for IBM offers multiple features and tools designed to increase and improve end-user productivity, bringing modern productivity enhancements to traditional green-screen host applications.

These include spell check, screen history, auto complete, auto expand, scratch pad and recent typing, as well as helping users’ find and share information via tight integration with the 2007 Office applications, including Microsoft Office Word 2007, Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.

There’s also support for VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and other advanced customization options that let clients easily extend Reflection 2007, using tools and skills already have in-house. Further, Reflection for IBM 2007’s support for Windows XP, Active Directory, Group Policy, Windows Terminal Services / Citrix Presentation Server, and PKI security infrastructures provides IT staff with the flexibility required to support often complex and evolving IT infrastructures.

The claim about increased productivity is backed by a recent (October 2007) study conducted by independent testing firm The Tolly Group. The study found that Reflection for IBM 2007 increases user productivity up to five times over IBM Personal Communications (PCOM) and NetManage RUMBA for the performance test scenarios conducted. The Tolly report also found that Reflection for IBM 2007 delivered a broader user productivity feature set, with richer capabilities, than both IBM PCOM and NetManage RUMBA.
