IdeaEarth has just launched evacuations.mobi. This great little site has several useful sections, including updated active storm information from the National Hurricane Center, information on storm surge and hurricane preparedness tips, driving directions for evacuations, evacuation zone information, and links to mobile friendly weather and search sites.
Although this site can be viewed from a personal computer, it was designed specifically to be viewed easily from a cell phone browser. Although any “regular” .com site also be viewed from mobile devices, they often load very slowly and are very difficult to navigate. Dot mobi sites, if developed under the correct guidelines, ensure the consumer will be viewing a site that is fast loading and suited for a small screen.
Mark Bennett, founder of Idea Earth, sees .mobi becoming very popular in the near future. “The cell phone has become such a staple in most of our lives. Many of us have played around with web browsing on our phones, but have found most full-blown websites are not well suited for the small screen”, Bennett states. “That’s why we’re so excited about dot mobi sites. You don’t need the latest $500.00 phone to enjoy a mobi site. They’re designed for all phones.”
“Idea Earth is currently working on several more mobile site projects” Bennett states. “We have already introduced DateRape.mobi, another public service site that offers victims of date rape valuable information and resources anonymously. We’re also finalizing a mobile site that will allow users to check the latest FBI Most Wanted list from their cell phones. We’re really excited to bring these services to the next generation of mobile browsing.”
