New Dermatology Nurses' Association President Marianne Tawa Strives to Increase Visibility of Organization, Profession

Marianne C. Tawa RN, MSN, ANP, has been named president of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA), a national professional nursing organization dedicated to promoting excellence in dermatologic care.

(1888PressRelease) April 15, 2009 - In her new role as president, Tawa, of Medfield, Mass., will work to infuse the DNA with fresh perspectives from an increasingly larger circle of new members and volunteers.

“The fundamental tenants of the DNA were founded upon, operate with, and are propelled forward by acts of volunteerism,” Tawa said. “Our accomplishments, both large and small, result from individual and collaborative acts of volunteerism. The DNA will strive to identify, depict, and describe the many faces of volunteerism. In doing so, a talented pool of new volunteers will be recruited, infused and nurtured within the DNA.”

Tawa has worked as a nurse practitioner for 25 years, 20 of which has been in advanced practice dermatology. She has served on the DNA’s Board of Directors since 2005 and is passionate about the DNA and the dermatology nursing field as a whole. To assist in propelling the association forward, Tawa said she would like to make strides in exploring new funding sources, programs and relationships.

In addition, Tawa intends to increase the visibility of the DNA as an organization committed to quality dermatologic care through the sharing of knowledge and expertise. Tawa will lead the DNA in instituting innovative educational programs, such as cost-effective Web-based learning modules and patient education materials.

Once Tawa’s objectives of increased membership and greater educational opportunities are met, the DNA will have even more opportunities to serve in advocacy roles through policy development, legislation and to interface with regulatory agencies.

Tawa has worked as an oncology and dermatology nurse practitioner at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Mass., since 2000.

Joining Tawa on DNA’s Board of Directors are: President-Elect, Lakshi M. Aldredge, MSN, RN, ANP-C; Treasurer, Barbara McKeehen, MSN, ARNP, DNC; Secretary, Trudy Abramson, BSN, RN, DNC; Immediate Past-President, Karrie M. Fairbrother, BSN, CDE, DNC; and Directors Marlie E. Lucas, MSN, ARNP-C, DNC; Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, MSN, RN; and Debra M. Shelby, DNP, ARNP, RNFA, CNOR, DNC.
